Gear that gets run on Lake America

The backbone of the Lake America trolling spread. Most boats run them on riggers, divers and coppers all at once, changing colour rather than presentation until something goes. Green and glow patterns dominate deep and early; warmer copper and orange tones come into their own on the staging fish in late summer.

Buying it: Buy in multiples of the patterns that work rather than one each of forty. A box of six proven colours in two sizes will outfish a tackle bag of singles.

When mature kings are the target, a flasher-and-fly combination pulls fish that will ignore a spoon. The flasher provides the rotation and flash; the fly is the small target trailing behind it. This is the standard mature-king presentation on this lake from midsummer onward.

Buying it: Leader length between flasher and fly matters more than most people expect, and it varies by flasher model. Buy pre-tied to start and learn the spacing before tying your own.

Divers take a lure down and out to the side, away from the boat's noise and the downrigger cables. On a lake where the fish frequently sit off to one side of the wake, a pair of divers roughly doubles the width of water a single pass covers.

Buying it: Get the ring or magnum sizes for deep water and note that each model's dive curve differs — the depth chart on the packet is worth keeping.

Precision depth control is what makes the summer thermocline fishery possible at all. The weight puts the lure exactly on the temperature break; the release decides whether the fish stays connected once it hits.

Buying it: Heavier weights hold a truer angle at trolling speed, which means the depth on your counter is closer to the depth of the lure. Release tension is a genuine adjustment, not a fixed setting.

Not every fish is deep. Leadcore and copper let you present a lure at a controlled depth well behind the boat, which is often what it takes for shallow, spooky fish on flat water — the classic early-season brown trout problem.

Buying it: Segments are counted in colours; each colour is ten yards. Boats generally carry a spread of different lengths rather than one length on every rod.

A line counter is not a luxury on this lake, it is the whole method. When a fish hits at 145 feet back on a particular spoon, that number is what lets you put the next rod in exactly the same place.

Buying it: Match rod action to the job — diver rods are heavier than rigger rods for a reason. Buy in pairs so a working setup can be duplicated across the spread.

A mature king is a large, heavy, angry animal arriving at the boat after a long fight. An undersized net is the single most common way to lose the fish of the trip in the last ten seconds.

Buying it: Go bigger than feels reasonable, and choose a rubber or coated bag — it releases hooks instead of tangling them, and it does far less damage to fish you intend to let go.

From October the fishery moves into the Salmon, the Oswego, the Genesee and Eighteenmile, and almost nothing from the boat transfers. Float and centrepin fishing in moving water is a different discipline with its own equipment.

Buying it: Long float rods and free-spooling reels are the standard for drifting a bait naturally through a run. Waders and studded boots are safety equipment on these rivers, not comfort items.
