What flow actually tells you
Check flow and water temperature before you go. DEC says steelhead “tend to move upstream on rising and falling water and hold steady in low flows or flooding conditions,” and are most active at 45-58°F; the run slows considerably as streams drop into the 30s. On other salmon streams, DEC says run timing is “more dependent on rainfall.” The Salmon and Oswego are dam-controlled, with the run normally peaking mid-September to mid-October. On the Salmon, DEC says raising the baseflow can start staged Chinook moving in from the lake; in 2026 that step was delayed. Check the live gauge.
