- There is a mandatory personal flotation device (PFD) zone on the Oswego River below the Varick Dam (NYSDEC Oswego River).
- Fishing from 1/2 hour after sunset to 1/2 hour before sunrise is prohibited in the Lake Ontario tributary rules, which include the Oswego section.
- DEC says there are no official NYS boat launch sites along the river.
What DEC says this week

- The river "is at 879 cubic feet per second (CFS) as of October 29."

- "Salmon are being caught at the dam. Try using jigs and floats as well."
- "Try using jigs and blade baits that mimic the color of a goby."
- "Important Note: Leto Island cannot be used to access the dam." "The dam can be accessed from the West side (Brookfield side)."
- "Remember there are mandatory personal flotation device (PFD) zones on the river."
The hotline does not say where its flow figure was measured. Read the current report before you go.
About the river
DEC says the Oswego River "offers a year-round diverse fishery from Chinook salmon in the fall to smallmouth bass in the summer," and lists walleye, northern pike, bass, trout, salmon, panfish and catfish. It says the river is stocked annually with 140,000 Chinook salmon and 20,000 rainbow trout (steelhead) (NYSDEC Oswego River).
The river has eight locks and six dams. DEC describes the Varick Street dam as impassable, and says salmon go to it as water cools.
Flows and timing
DEC says flows on rivers such as the Salmon and the Oswego are managed by hydropower dams, and that the peak on those rivers usually falls between mid-September and mid-October (NYSDEC Pacific salmon fishing). See our salmon run timing guide.
River gauge
USGS station 04249000, Oswego River at Lock 7, Oswego NY, reports discharge and gage height. USGS real-time values are provisional.
At last check this gauge reported no water temperature, so this page shows none.

Rules, as DEC states them
These are summaries. The DEC page is the rule (NYSDEC regulations).
- Where they apply: DEC says Lake Ontario and tributaries regulations apply from the Varick Street dam to Lake Ontario, and statewide regulations apply upstream (NYSDEC Oswego River). The tributary table lists the Oswego section as "From the Utica St. Bridge upstream to the Varick Dam."
- Season: seasonal tributary regulations apply September 1 to March 31.
- Night closure: fishing from 1/2 hour after sunset to 1/2 hour before sunrise is prohibited. DEC's table lists this in its Hours column for the Lake Ontario tributary rows.
- Trout and salmon: open all year. 15 inch minimum, except rainbow trout or steelhead at 25 inches in tributaries. 3 in combination, with no more than 1 rainbow trout (or steelhead) and 1 brown trout in the tributaries.
- Lake trout (below the Varick Street dam): December 1 to September 30, so closed in October and November. Upstream of the dam, statewide rules apply.
- Lake sturgeon: closed.
- Hooks: one hook with a single hook point (floating lures and artificial flies are excepted). Hooks must be free-swinging, except on an artificial fly or jigs. The gap cannot exceed 1/2 inch. Weighted hooks are prohibited except artificial flies and jigs weighing no more than 1/8 oz.
Access and safety
- Boat launches: "There are no official NYS boat launch sites along the river," per DEC. We have not confirmed city or private launches, so this page does not list them. DEC's Central NY hotline page points to Oswego County Tourism for PFD zone and loaner information.
- PFD zone: mandatory below the Varick Dam.
- Leto Island: per the hotline, it cannot be used to reach the dam. Use the west side (Brookfield side).
- Safety: DEC's Pacific salmon page carries safety advice for tributary anglers. Read it before you wade (NYSDEC).
