Fishing Oswego through the year

Spring

Browns nearshore, and steelhead and the occasional holdover in the lower river.

Summer

Offshore kings and steelhead; the charter fleet is at full tilt.

Fall

Kings stage heavily off the river mouth from late August, then push in. This is the port at its peak.

Winter

The lower river fishes for steelhead; note the personal flotation device requirements posted on the Oswego River.

Getting on the water

Wright's Landing and the Oswego Harbor complex, with the Oswego River running straight into the lake through the city. This is the largest concentration of licensed charter captains anywhere on the lake, which is precisely why it is worth checking the forecast and getting there early.

The water itself

Oswego Harbor gives quick access to the eastern basin, and the Oswego River — a big, dam-controlled river carrying flow all the way from Oneida Lake and the Finger Lakes — pushes a substantial plume out into the lake. That plume stages salmon in late summer, and the river itself holds fish well into the season.

Oswego questions

Why is Oswego the busiest port on the lake?

It combines a large protected harbour, quick access to the eastern basin, a major river that stages fish, and proximity to the Salmon River — plus the infrastructure that has grown up around all of that. More licensed charter captains operate here than anywhere else on Lake America.

Can I fish the Oswego River from shore?

Yes, and it is a well-known fishery for salmon and steelhead in season. Note that personal flotation device requirements are posted and enforced on parts of the river — check the current rules before you wade.

When should I book an Oswego charter?

For the fall king run, as far ahead as you can — the last week of August through September is the busiest stretch of the year and good captains fill months out. Midsummer offshore trips are easier to get on short notice.

Water temperature above is measured at the nearest NOAA station (Oswego), so treat it as a reference for the general area rather than a reading from the exact spot you plan to fish. Charter captains fishing out of Oswego →
