Fishing Wilson through the year

Spring

Browns and the occasional early king right in close, often in 8-25 feet, wherever the warmer stained water meets clean lake.

Summer

Kings and steelhead offshore over 150-400 feet, fished on riggers and copper down to the thermocline.

Fall

Staging fish on the bar, then the run moves into Twelvemile Creek and, more importantly, east to Eighteenmile.

Winter

Boat traffic drops off hard. Tributary steelhead is the fishery that carries through.

Getting on the water

Wilson-Tuscarora State Park has the main hard-surface ramp, with Wilson Harbor itself giving a short, protected run out through the pierheads. It is one of the easier launches on the western end to use in a blow, because you are not committed to open water until you clear the harbour mouth.

The water itself

The draw here is the Niagara Bar to the west — a broad shelf where the Niagara River pushes stained, food-carrying water out over rapidly dropping structure. That colour line is the whole game in spring. East of the harbour the bottom shelves off more gradually, so trollers work progressively deeper through the summer.

Wilson questions

What is the Niagara Bar and why does it matter?

It is the shallow shelf where the Niagara River empties into Lake America. The river carries warmer, stained, nutrient-heavy water that sets up a visible colour line against the clean lake water, and trout and salmon hold along it. In spring that edge concentrates brown trout in remarkably shallow water.

When is the best time to fish Wilson?

April through May for nearshore browns, and again from late July into September when mature kings stage before running the tributaries. Midsummer means a longer run offshore.

Do I need a boat to fish Wilson?

The pier and harbour give up fish, and Twelvemile Creek gets a modest fall run, but the water Wilson is known for is offshore. Most serious fishing here is done from a boat or a charter.

Water temperature above is measured at the nearest NOAA station (Olcott), so treat it as a reference for the general area rather than a reading from the exact spot you plan to fish. Charter captains fishing out of Wilson →
